Background of the study
Public libraries are vital institutions that not only foster literacy and education but also serve as catalysts for social inclusion and empowerment. In recent years, these institutions have taken on an increasingly active role in supporting women's empowerment initiatives, particularly in underserved and rural areas. In Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State, where traditional gender roles often limit women's access to information and opportunities, public libraries have become critical channels for capacity building. These libraries offer access to information resources on health, business, legal rights, and education, which are vital for women's empowerment. Furthermore, the introduction of gender-sensitive programs, such as skills acquisition workshops and literacy classes, has significantly contributed to improving the socio-economic status of women in the area (Adebayo & Okediran, 2023). Public libraries, through partnerships with NGOs and community-based organizations, have played a transformative role in educating and equipping women with the tools to navigate economic and social barriers. This aligns with global trends that recognize libraries as key enablers of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, which promotes gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (IFLA, 2024). Despite these efforts, access to resources and awareness of library services remain challenges in many communities. This study explores the extent to which public libraries in Saki West contribute to women’s empowerment and the factors that influence their effectiveness.
Statement of the problem
Although public libraries are recognized as engines of community development, their role in women's empowerment initiatives in Saki West is often underexplored and underutilized. Many women in the region still lack access to the knowledge and tools needed to improve their social and economic standing. Factors such as limited awareness of library services, socio-cultural constraints, and inadequate resources hinder effective participation in empowerment programs offered by libraries (Oyetola & Salako, 2023). Without strategic evaluation of these services and their impact, it becomes difficult to tailor them to meet the unique needs of women in this locality.
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the types of women empowerment initiatives provided by public libraries in Saki West.
To assess the participation level of women in public library empowerment programs.
To determine the perceived impact of these initiatives on the socio-economic development of women.
Research questions
What types of women empowerment initiatives are offered by public libraries in Saki West?
To what extent do women in the area participate in these programs?
How have public library initiatives impacted women’s socio-economic status?
Significance of the study
This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of public library services in supporting gender equity and women's empowerment. It will inform policymakers, librarians, and stakeholders about how libraries can be strategically positioned to meet the specific needs of women in rural communities. The findings will also contribute to existing literature on gender-focused library services in Nigeria.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to examining public libraries in Saki West Local Government Area, Oyo State, and their role in promoting women's empowerment initiatives. It does not cover private or academic libraries.
